How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are vital to your home’s beauty and comfort; they provide a glorious view of your outdoor space, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your home. Because they are so vital to a home, they go through a lot of action. It’s wise to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.

Window glass can get dirty pretty fast, even sooner with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning isn’t that hard. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have features that make it easier to clean the exterior of your windows from inside your home, too. Looking for a simple, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors swears on:

  1. Begin by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and brushing will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. You should not use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment along the side of your window screen that faces indoors. You can also use this vacuum piece to pick up any leftover dirt and dust around your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your window’s glass. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Then you can add the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from several different directions for the best clean.
  4. Give your windows time to air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if there are any streaks left.

We’ve got a few more tips, too! We encourage you to clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too quickly and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals prefer microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your gorgeous view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean all year long.
